The Hospital Director of the St. John of God Hospital, Sefwi-Asafo, Br. Johannes B. Torwoe, has announced the hospital’s plan of setting up a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). He made the announcement during the National launch of the 27th World Day of the Sick which was hosted by the Hospital on the 8th February, 2019.
The project is in line with the Hospitaller Brothers’ vision of making the hospital a Centre of Excellence in healthcare delivery in the Western North Region and beyond.
St. John of God Hospital operates the busiest maternity unit within the catchment area of about 150km mileradius. 2,295 deliveries was record last year 2018. On the down turn it also recorded 31 fresh still births in the same year. The hospital refers all neonatal cases because it does not have the facility to handle them, meanwhile the next referral centre is about 160km away. By way of laying the ground in building the capacity to handle neonatal cases the hospital is seeking to construct a neonatal intensive care unit. This will in the long run strengthen the hospital’s healthcare delivery system in general.
A ground breaking ceremony was subsequently performed at the site for the construction of the facility, by Most. Rev. Emmanuel Fianu, Bishop responsible for Health.
Management of the Hospital is therefore appealing to public-spirited organizations to support the project.
