The Bishop responsible for Health, Most. Rev. Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, SVD, has undertaken a four-day working visit of the Cape Coast Archdiocese.
It was to afford him the opportunity to get at first hand, reports on the working operations of the various staff at the various facilities as well as to acquaint himself with the locations of the facilities.
Bishop Fianu assumed oversight responsibility of the National Catholic Service as the Bishop Responsible for Health, on behalf of the Ghana Bishops Conference in 2017 after Bishop Joseph Afrifah- Agyekum served in that capacity for seven years.
The visit took the Bishop and his team from the Directorate of Health (DOH) to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Assin Fosu, Our Lady of Grace Hospital, Breman Asikuma, St. Luke Hospital Apam, Mercy Women Hospital Mankesim and the St. Gregory Hospital, Gomoa Budumburam. The team also met with the Archbishop of the Cape Coast Archdiocese, Most Rev. Mathias Nketsiah and the Regional Director of Health Service, Central Region, Dr. Alexis Nang-Beifubah.
The Bishop had closed door meetings with Management of the hospitals, sightsaw the wards and other parts of the hospitals and had a durbar with the staff.
At the meeting with the Regional Director of Health Service, the Bishop expressed his delight at the cordiality that had existed between the Catholic Health Service and the Ghana Health Service. He further appealed to the Director to consider the catholic facilities within his jurisdiction in the allocation of resources and human resource personnel.
Dr. Alexis, on his part, pledged his support to institu tions belonging to the Christian Health Association of Ghana because of his work experience with some CHAG facilities in particular.
Issues raised at his interaction with management and staff of the facilities included the unavailability of logistics and equipment, staff motivation and issues of promotion and transfers.
Bishop Fianu admonished Managers of the facilities to be pro-active and innovative in the face of present challenge of dwindling donor support in order to sustain the financial gains made over the years. He tasked them to develop a Strategic Plan which will help them stay focused and prioritize their developmental projects.
The Bishop’s team comprised the Director for Health at the National Catholic Health Service, Mr. George A. Adjei, Senior Coordinator, Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr. Ivan T. Essegbey , Senior Coordinator, Health Systems Management, Mr. Lawrence Adjare, Deputy Coordinator, Mr. Peter Batsa, Deputy Coordinator , Projects, Mr. Gabriel Nii Otu Ankrah and Technical/Administrative officer, Ms. Abigail Yayah. The Executive Director of Diocesan Health Service of the Cape Coast Archdiocese, Mr. Stephen Takyi – Ansah, hosted the team.
